Ortigueira is named after the surrounding area which is called Ortegal. Cabo Ortegal which juts out into the Cantabrian sea is well known in shipping and the most prominent landmark in the region. Ortigueira is a nice historical town with a beautiful marina, shops, restaurants/bars etc. Every Thursday is market day. Medical facilities are available; there is a well equipped hospital.
