The Rías Baixas (Galician for "Lower Rias") are a part of Costa del Marisco facing the Atlantic Ocean in the southern part of Galicia. They consist of the southern part of the Province of Coruña and the entire Province of Pontevedra. To the South the Rias Baixas border the Portuguese coast, and ends at Cape Finisterre to the North. The area is famed for its natural beauty, its spectacular coastline and beaches, the famous seafood restaurants, the best white wine in Europe (claimed by some experts). The area is affluent, the cities are more cosmopolitan.
Just a few kilometers inland from the coast the landscape and architecture change. In these coastal ranges, the country is (although studded with vineyards) wilder, more pure and unspoiled.
There are the nature parks where one can walk for hours, Cies Islands, located in the mouth of the Ria de Vigo is such a park, also the nature/beach park of Illa de Arousa is stunningly beautiful. In February 2007 the British newspaper The Guardian chose the beach of Rodas, on the island of Monteagudo, as "the best beach in the world."
